This post is from 2009; for info on the 2010 Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon, head over to my Red Sox blog RedSoxThoughts.com!
I’m asking for your help to Take #JimmyFund Viral on Twitter as a top-10 “trending topic” from August 27-28, 2009, in support of the Red Sox WEEI / NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon.
Even in this poor economy, we can spread the word about the Jimmy Fund outside of the traditional Red Sox / New England market and help them SURPASS the $5 million fundraising goal to help kids with cancer.
UPDATE: Aug 27 at 12:29 PM: Surpassing my goal of a mere 30 ReTweets, this post has been Tweeted nearly 90 TIMES! I’ve donated $100 as a thank you for your support (scroll down for a screen shot of the email receipt). Please continue to ReTweet #JimmyFund August 27-28 and make it a trending topic!
The 8th Annual Red Sox WEEI / NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon is a two-day fundraising event — August 27 to 28, 2009 — to benefit The Jimmy Fund and children with cancer. The Jimmy Fund supports cancer research and children’s care at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. As an avid Red Sox fan, this annual fundraiser has quickly become one of my favorite events of the year.
WEEI in Boston simulcasts its radio broadcast on television with the New England Sports Network (NESN), in conjunction with the Boston Red Sox, to sponsor the event. The two-day programming features dozens of celebrity contributors and inspiring stories from children who are undergoing cancer treatment and many who have recovered fully, thanks to The Jimmy Fund and Dana Farber.
This is a major event that raised $4.8 million last year, and over $16 million to date!
In conjunction with the leadership philosophy set forth in my future book, The Quiet Leader, I am starting a Twitter-based promotional campaign that will utilize viral marketing techniques to widely and rapidly spread the word about the Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon this August 27-28.
The purpose is to promote the Jimmy Fund radio-telethon outside of the traditional Red Sox / New England radio and television market. In 2008, states outside of New England raised just over $436,000 towards last year’s $4.8 million total. That’s not bad, but it’s under 10% of the total amount raised.
Our goal is to spread the word across the internet, and to help The Jimmy Fund surpass its $5 million goal to strike out cancer in kids! While the campaign is Twitter-based, I encourage visitors to utilize other social networking tools to promote this effort.
How we can do it:
- Make #JimmyFund a” trending topic” on Twitter August 27-28!
- Spread word about the Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon through social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace.
- Promote the Jimmy Fund widely throughout the internet to help them surpass their $5 million goal!
What you can do: First of all, PLEASE DONATE! Especially during these times of economic recession, every dollar truly helps contribute to striking out cancer in kids. Let’s help the Jimmy Fund SURPASS it’s $5 million fundraising goal!
Proceeds to the Jimmy Fund help support young kids with cancer, their treatment, and the amazing staff that helps them through these trying times. Need more motivation? Listen to a recap of last year’s telethon on WEEI.com. Charitable donations to the Jimmy Fund and Dana Farber are tax deductible in accordance with Federal, State and local law (but that shouldn’t be your only reason for giving!). Can’t donate?
