    • A Domino in the Sea

      A Domino in the Sea

By Dave Ursillo on Dec 4, 2011

      You are a domino.

But unlike mere game pieces, you are not trapped in a single-file line. In life, there is not a domino behind you and another in front, limiting you to only fall either one way or the other, depending which tips you over first.

In this world, you are a domino in a sea of dominoes: an active and reactive player, one of six billion that exist among a constantly swirling tide of words, thoughts, actions and deeds. One cause occurs on the other side of the sea, rippling throughout dozens or millions others to finally affect you, …

small change endures; fast change fizzles (a 20-second read)

By Dave Ursillo on Nov 18, 2011

      small is not insignificant.

      fast will not last.

change takes time and makes strides in small steps, because true change subtly alters the course we’re already upon — long before the effects are felt, longer before the results are reaped.

change alters what most already believe (or assume) to be true, right, the best way there is. The nature of genuine change must upturn the status quo, which the majority supports — consciously or unconsciously.

Change agents must convince most people that they are wrong, or are misguided, or have simply forgotten what they already know.

      Everybody wants change.

      Few …

11 Cities, 7.5 Thousand Miles and 38 Days Later [PHOTOESSAY]

By Dave Ursillo on Nov 15, 2011

“A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving.” ― Lao Tsu

I’m writing from the outdoor patio of a local coffee house — not bad for early November, especially considering a snow storm ripped through New England when I was away!

A light, dewy breeze complements the fullest, brightest sun of the day — now late autumn, even its highest peak lingers modestly above the horizon.

The air is sweet, garnished gently by scents of warmed earth and emblazoned leaves.

And, after the single longest spat of on-again/off-again travel that I’ve ever committed to in …

    • Challenging What it Means to Lead, Live-and-On-Air in Rhode Island

Challenging What it Means to Lead, Live-and-On-Air in Rhode Island

By Dave Ursillo on Oct 10, 2011

Last Wednesday, I had the honor of speaking live and on air with Anthony Gemma — an acclaimed local businessman, entrepreneur, motivational speaker and former Congressional candidate — on his radio program The Next Level here locally in southern New England on AM 790.

Our discussion was also simulcast live on Ustream and BlogTalkRadio.

Lead Without Followers is not about leadership in any conventional sense.

However, discussing these ideas on air with a local leader was not only a lot of fun and quite humbling — I think it is very beneficial for the mission of inciting people to question …

A Small Book Tour with a Big Cause: 10 Scholarships for School Girls in Sierra Leone

By Dave Ursillo on Oct 3, 2011

It’s been a full week since the grand launch of my debut book, Lead Without Followers: How to Save Our World by Radically Redefining the Meaning of Leadership.

Many reflections, lessons and blog posts will follow on what I’ve learned and how it’s all panned out.

But today, I’m really excited to tell you about my small self-funded book tour and its IndieGoGo fundraiser with a very big cause: providing 10 educational scholarships for at-risk school girls in Sierra Leone, West Africa, through an amazing nonprofit organization called One Girl.

As of last week, I had a goal …

    • Only Love Endures (A 20-Second Read)

Only Love Endures (A 20-Second Read)

By Dave Ursillo on Sep 28, 2011

Fame fades. Money is finite. Power is an illusion.

      Only love endures.

We define leadership based upon externalities: all of the things we are without, don’t have, and think we need to make us happy, fulfilled and “successful”.

True leadership is to embody that which endures on its own. It’s felt, not forced. It multiplies effortlessly. It lasts forever.

Popularity wanes. Followers leave. Status is a deception.

      Only love endures.

The Cornerstones of Leadership (And How They Reveal the Recipe for a Brilliant Life), Part 1

By Dave Ursillo on Sep 27, 2011

“Maybe the leadership that lasts the longest is the leadership that is so humble, so good, and yet so unspoken that it can only take root in others by quietly sprouting within their hearts—dawning in them from a place of intrinsic goodness and unyielding strength; from the originating place of human love and kindness.” — Lead Without Followers

My new book Lead Without Followers is a lot less about being a “leader” in any sense we’re familiar with when we discuss leadership today, and is a lot more about becoming more human.

And maybe simply becoming more human is the …
