The Story Behind this Book
Big Apple, Black Sand and the Midnight Sun is a collection of 15 essays that were written across 13,000 miles of travel from 2012 to 2013 as I wandered from New York City to the beaches of Hawaii and mystical landscapes of Iceland.
These true stories tell a vivid story about what its like to strive to make the “journey in life” your greatest reward– through highs and lows, love and heartbreak, moments of adventure and even two national tragedies.
In truth, I never wrote these essays to publish them as a book.
But that’s exactly why these stories hold weight as an honest look into the romanticized modern-day, location independent or “nomadic” lifestyle.
What happens when you are heartbroken in the most beautiful corner of the world?
How do you face your own demons when you can’t even pinpoint where you are on a map?
What does it mean to be self-reliant in an interdependent world?
Big Apple, Black Sand and the Midnight Sun hopes to answer these questions, and more.
“Dave transforms introspection into fodder for our reflection in Big Apple, Black Sand and The Midnight Sun. His writing is philosophical, poetic and profoundly real.”Gemma Stone, Calgary
“I just finished Big Apple, Black Sand and the Midnight Sun. THAT’s the real stuff of life. ‘Thank you’ seems… a pale thing to say in the face of your writhing artistry.”Jeanie Witcraft, Atlanta, Georgia
